The myths of weight training for ladies seem to never fade away. In this article, I want to bust the most common misconceptions and share the scientific facts about it with you.
Myth #1: Weight Training Will Make You Bulky
It is not surprising this is the most popular myth among women. Regular weight training does NOT make you muscular. Why? The explanation is simple. Women cannot naturally synthesize enough testosterone (one of the major anabolic hormones) as men do. Due to this fact, a woman is unable to gain a lot of muscle mass just by lifting heavy things.
When you hear the word "weights” you probably imagine a female bodybuilder. Most of these women (nothing personal to them, everyone has the freedom to choose) use anabolic steroids (synthetic testosterone) and other supplements to develop such physics. In addition, in order to achieve such results, you will have to spend hours in the gym lifting bars, and let’s not forget that most female bodybuilders have a genetic predisposition to gaining muscle mass!
Female bodybuilders don’t look like this by chance. They put a huge effort in this, backed up by synthetic testosterone and appropriate genetics. If you simply do weight training without taking steroids, you have no worries. Moreover, this way you’ll get rid of cellulite and get a tight body like the magazines cover fitness models.
Myth #2: Weight Training Won’t Help You Burn Fat
If we want to lose weight and burn subcutaneous fat, we have to do monotonic cardio workouts until we faint, right?
Wrong.
In fact, in the previous article we analyzed in depth why monotonic cardio workouts are not the most effective method of weight loss. If you want to achieve fast and lasting results in fat burning, head to weight training!
Myth #3: Weight Training Will Melt Away Your Boobies
With strength training, the body burns calories not only during the workout but also hours afterwards. If you take fewer calories than you burn, your body will focus on fat stores to correct the calorie deficit. Remember, you burn fat from all parts of the body, not specifically from the chest. Unless you fall below 12% of subcutaneous fat (something extremely difficult and potentially unhealthy for a woman), you have no cause for concern.
However, I will disappoint you by telling you that the opposite is not possible either. Breasts are mainly composed of fatty tissue. Therefore, you cannot enlarge your bust with weight lifting.
Myth #4: Weight Training Will Limit Your Flexibility and Range of Motion
It is quite the opposite. If you perform the exercises with the right technique, your flexibility will actually increase significantly. Exercises such as squats, dead lift, flyes, dumbbell bench press and pull-ups provide a full amplitude of movement. Thus, performing these exercises in a proper and safe way, you will be more flexible and mobile.
Myth #5: If You Stop Training, Muscles Will Turn into Fat
It's like saying gold can turn into silver. Muscles and fats are two completely different types of tissue. When you decide to stop training, you will start losing muscle because of the lack of physical activity. In addition, most people stop keeping their diet too. Delayed metabolism combined with poor eating habits create the impression that your muscles magically transform into fat. What really happens is that you lose muscle mass due to decreased activity and accumulate fat due to poor dietary choices.
In Conclusion
Next time you wonder what strategy to choose in the fight against kilograms, think about the information I shared with you. Ladies, working out like men doesn’t mean you will start to look like men! Those of you who want to shape their body and to get rid of excess fat, have no reason to fear the weights
